The Two Versions of Me — And Why I Let Myself Rest First

Inspiration for this post

There are days when motivation simply disappears.

Not slowly. Not gently.

It just drops — and suddenly everything feels heavier than it should. The to-do list. The thoughts. The simple act of getting through the day.

On one of those days, a thought came back to me that I once read somewhere, and it has quietly stayed with me ever since.

It's become something I return to whenever I feel like everything is about to pull me under.

I wanted to share it with you today.

The Image That Stayed With Me

I once came across a simple thought experiment.

Imagine it's your very last day on earth.

And on that day, you meet another version of yourself — the one who took a few more leaps, who rested when she needed to but never let the heaviness become the whole story, who kept gently choosing herself, day after day.

And somehow, standing there… she feels like a slightly different person.

Not better in a dramatic way. Not someone who never struggled or never got tired.

Just someone who, in all those small, quiet moments, chose to keep going a little more often than not.

Why This Image Helps Me

When I first sat with this, I didn't feel judged by it.

I felt something softer. Almost like a gentle nudge from someone who genuinely wants good things for me.

Because this isn't about looking back with guilt.

It's simply a quiet little mirror that shows up in exactly the moments I need it — usually right when motivation has already packed its bags and left, and I'm sitting there wondering if it's even worth continuing today.

And in that moment, a simple question rises: Which version of myself am I taking care of right now?

Rest Comes First — Always

Here is something important I want to say clearly.

This image was never meant to push me past my limits. It was never about ignoring exhaustion or pretending everything is fine when it isn't.

When the weight really comes — when energy is gone and my mind feels full — the very first thing I do is rest.

I let myself stop. Even just for a little while.

Because you cannot pour from an empty cup, and rest is not the opposite of growth — it's part of it.

Only once I've allowed myself that pause does the next thought quietly appear.

Remembering Where I Actually Am

Because here is the truth I come back to, every single time.

Nothing is wrong.

I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I have figured out so much already — more than I usually give myself credit for.

And life, most of the time, really is beautiful.

This heaviness, this cloud passing over — it's just that. A cloud.

Not the whole sky. Not a verdict on my life. Just weather, moving through, the way weather always does.

And Then, Gently, I Rise Again

So once I've rested, and once I've reminded myself that nothing has actually gone wrong, I get up.

Not with pressure. Not with guilt.

But with a quiet kind of trust — the same trust you'd have in any cloud eventually passing, in any storm eventually settling.

I rest. And then I go on. Because I know why I'm here, and I know this heaviness isn't the whole story — it's just today's weather.

A Small Way to Use This

So next time motivation disappears and everything feels like too much, here is what I try:

  • First, I let myself rest. Truly. Without guilt attached to it.
  • Then, I remind myself gently: nothing is wrong. This is just a cloud passing through an otherwise beautiful sky.
  • I bring to mind the image of that other version of me — not to compare, but to remember that I'm already, quietly, becoming her.
  • And then I take one small step forward. Just the next one.

Final Thought

You don't have to carry everything today.

You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to feel the weight fully, without pretending it isn't there.

And when you're ready — because you will be — you get to rise again. Gently. Knowing that nothing has gone wrong, that you've already come so far, and that this cloud, too, will pass.

Because life really is beautiful. Some days it just comes with a little weather.

Wishing you a beautiful day.
