If Your Inner Voice Were a Person, Would You Be Friends?

Inspiration for this post

This one followed naturally from something I had been sitting with — the quiet voice that talks us out of things, the one that whispers so gently we barely notice it's there.

And a new question showed up right behind it.

If that voice were an actual person, standing next to you all day, every day… would you even like them?

A Strange Way to Look at It

Try this for a moment.

Imagine your inner voice stepped out of your head and became a real person.

Someone who walks beside you from the moment you wake up until the moment you fall asleep.

Someone who comments on almost everything you do.

Someone whose voice you hear more than anyone else's in your entire life.

Now ask yourself honestly:

Would I choose this person as my friend?

Would I want to spend my life next to them?

The Friend You Never Actually Chose

Here is what makes this question so uncomfortable.

We didn't choose this voice.

It was shaped early. Absorbed. Built from things we heard, things we were told, things we quietly decided about ourselves before we even had the tools to question them.

And yet, we spend more time with it than with any other person in our life.

More than our partner. More than our closest friend. More than our own mother.

This voice is the most constant relationship you will ever have.

Would You Choose This Friendship?

So look honestly at how it speaks to you.

If it constantly points out what's wrong. If it questions your worth the moment something doesn't go your way. If it's quick to criticize and slow to acknowledge what you did well.

Would you accept that from an actual friend?

Would you keep spending time with someone who spoke to you like that, day after day, for years?

Most of us would eventually create distance. We would notice the pattern and think: this friendship isn't good for me.

But with our own inner voice… we simply stay. Because it doesn't feel like a choice. It feels like just how it is.

Why We Don't Even Notice

This is the part worth sitting with.

If someone else spoke to you the way your inner voice sometimes does, you would recognize it instantly. You would feel the harshness. You would feel the disrespect.

But because it comes from inside, it slips past unnoticed.

We don't experience it as an outside opinion.

We experience it as the truth.

And that is exactly what makes it so powerful — and so easy to never question.

What If You Actually Could Choose?

Here is something worth considering.

You didn't choose this voice in the beginning. It was shaped by people, moments, and experiences before you had any say in the matter.

But you are not entirely without choice now.

You can start noticing what it says.

You can start asking: Would I let a real friend speak to me like this?

And little by little, you can start shaping a different kind of inner voice. One that's honest, yes — but also kind. One that tells you the truth without tearing you down in the process.

What a Good Friend Actually Sounds Like

A real friend doesn't pretend everything is perfect.

A real friend tells you the truth, even when it's uncomfortable.

But a real friend also doesn't kick you while you're down. They don't use every mistake as proof that you're not enough.

A real friend believes in you, even in the moments when you don't quite believe in yourself.

That is exactly the kind of voice worth building inside you.

Becoming Your Own Best Friend

This doesn't happen overnight. It's not one decision — it's a practice, repeated quietly, day after day.

It starts with noticing. Just noticing what the voice actually says, without immediately agreeing with it.

Then it becomes a question: Is this true? Or is this simply the old, familiar way this voice always speaks to me?

And slowly, you begin choosing different words. Not fake positivity. Just something closer to what an actual good friend would say.

"That didn't go the way I hoped. What can I learn from it?" instead of "I always mess things up."

"I'm doing my best with what I know right now" instead of "I should be further along than this."

A Gentle Reminder

You will spend your entire life with this voice.

So it's worth asking, honestly, every once in a while:

Is this someone I would choose as a friend?

Is this someone I would want walking beside me for the rest of my life?

And if the answer is no — that's not a life sentence. It's simply the beginning of building a different relationship.

One conversation, one moment, one honest question at a time.

Because you don't have to inherit this friendship forever.

You get to slowly become your own best friend.

Wishing you a beautiful day.
