The Combine Harvester — Why You Cant Gather the New Until You have Let Go of the Old

Inspiration for this post

I keep coming back to this metaphor — a combine harvester.

It explains something so many of us struggle with when we try to move forward or take something new in.

The Combine Harvester

Before it enters a new field, it is empty.

As it moves through, it gathers.

It processes.

It packs what it needs.

And it releases what it doesn't.

Only then does it move to the next row.

Every pass begins the same way: empty.

If it never released anything, it would break down under the weight — no room left to gather anything new.

This Is Us, Too

Everything we go through settles somewhere inside us.

If we never process it, we keep dragging it with us.

And when we carry something long enough, it quietly shapes everything we take in afterward.

We don't see things as they are.

We see them as we are.

So if you're still full of what happened before, you genuinely cannot receive something new the way it was meant to be received.

Not because you don't want to.

But because there's no space.

A Story From My Own Life

For many years, I was a workaholic.

I burned out — twice.

What actually changed things wasn't pretending it never happened.

It was understanding why I did it.

Once I understood that, I no longer needed to repeat the pattern.

And only then could I let it go.

Today, it's not weight I carry.

It's simply a reminder: I know this road, and I choose not to walk it again.

Letting Go Doesn't Mean Forgetting

It means you stop dragging it into every new field you enter.

How to Actually Begin

The first step is simple, even if it isn't easy: decide that you won't keep carrying it forward.

That decision alone is enormous.

Because what we hold onto is often about identity — old roles, old versions of ourselves.

Those roles served their purpose when they served it.

You're allowed to say: "Yes, I was that. And it mattered. And now I'm moving on."

Understand Before You Release

Ask yourself gently:

What was really driving this?

What was I trying to protect, prove, or avoid?

Once you understand it, the grip loosens on its own.

Final Thought

Next time you feel stuck — like nothing new can land — pause and ask:

What am I still carrying from the last field?

You were never meant to hold everything forever.

You were meant to gather, process, release — and move forward, empty and ready for what's next.

Wishing you a beautiful day.

Hi, I'm Davy Jerončič, founder of Be Truly Empowered.

I created Be Truly Empowered to offer a safe and supportive space where people can slow down, reconnect with themselves, and better understand the patterns shaping their lives.

I believe that lasting change doesn't come from fixing ourselves—it begins with awareness. When we learn to understand ourselves with curiosity and compassion, we naturally gain greater clarity, self-trust, and confidence to move forward.

Through my writing, coaching, and upcoming book, I hope to help people reconnect with their inner wisdom and create meaningful, lasting change.

Every article on Be Truly Empowered is personally written by Davy Jerončič and reflects her own experiences, observations, and approach to awareness and personal growth.
